Horizontal gene transfer

So my parents shared this story with us and it was too funny not to pass on to the world at large.

Apparently at a dinner party, a good family friend cornered my mother in the kitchen and pointed out how absolutely remarkable and strong Jolyon's resemblence to the G---- family is... whereby she presumably meant by family G---- my own immediate family of birth, because Stephanie and I made G---- our family last name as well, so Jolyon doesn't just resemble a G----, he is a G---- and has the government documents to prove it.

The family friend went on a bit saying that it was really such a strong resemblance and he just looked so much like all the men in my family that she was just amazed.

Thereby, she apparently was trying to figure out the age old question that keeps the Maury Povitch Show in business: "Who's the babydaddy?", or in this case, "Who's the babydonor?" And much like Maury, she'd assembled a panel of my two brothers - and possibly my dad, too, I guess? Urgh - no offense meant, but urgh nontheless.

Which just goes to show that people can fabricate family resemblence anywhere from total scratch, because, shall we say, we plan on using the same donor for the next child which I hope to carry, which sure as heck eliminates my siblings and father from consideration.

Incidentally, my mother and my father just wrote a book on Horizontal Gene Transfer so if they aren't an authority in the matter of how to get their genes sneakily into a non-vertical descendant, I don't know who is. :)
