Diaper update

Thanks, everyone, for the wealth of good suggestions.

The Bumgenius inserts are microfiber ones, so they are supposedly super-absorbant and I don't think there's anything that absorbs more. They went through the wash 4 times initially before we even used them on him, so they've definitely made it through the was 10x by now.

The thicker of the two inserts, folded over, has been working somewhat better during the daytime, with vigilant changing... but we still have leaks, though a bit less often.

We have been trying the double-stuffed for nighttime, though again, there's still leaking. It is hard to get them on, but moving up to the next-largest setting of snaps has improved this a bit. We still have to pull them super-taut and he gets red welts from the elastic. Mess containment has increased somewhat, though it's still very suboptimal.

We just stripped the diapers of residue by washing them with original Dawn dishwashing liquid -- apparently, the fact that we use other detergents in our washing machine at other times might be enough to leave residue and require stripping on a regular basis. There have been times when the inserts are not totally saturated and there is still leaking, so we're hoping the stripping solves that problem. There are other times we've had leaks and the diaper is saturated as a result of a single pee in spite of having been changed recently -- but using the thicker or double stuffing really does seem to cut down on that. I really hope that we don't ever need a more absorbent diaper than this as he grows, because we're at maximum capacity already.

So, right now, we're still waiting to see how the stripped diapers will work out, since we've now done everything we can.

No matter what, we're totally not willing to give up disposables for trips out of the home, though. We just can't change him with the frequency with which cloth diapers need changing when we're out of the house. We may also follow the excellent advice and do a disposable at night. The double-stuffed diaper makes it hard for him to even lie flat due to his tremendous bulk.
