21 weeks: ultrasound and really halfway!

This morning at exactly 21 weeks, we had the big anatomy ultrasound! Everything looked to us like we have a very healthy baby*, though we don't actually get to talk to our midwives about the results until Monday. We asked not to find out the sex, so that will remain a surprise until delivery!

*Mind, I'm not a trained professional, but I play one in the classroom, and I definitely do know enough anatomy to know that a four chambered heart and an aorta are good things to have, and our baby does! More sophisticated analyses await the verdict of the radiologist on Monday (the technician took pictures, and got approval that they were adequate from the radiologist, who will send the verdict to our midwives to talk to us about).

The head to rear measurement was about 17 cm - didn't get the full head-to-toe measurement because the baby is just too big to fit on the screen at once now. Heartbeat was a totally average 146 bpm, and we could watch the atria and then the ventricles contracting smoothly. Our baby weighs about 15 oz at this point (or 425 grams), which is about a week ahead of schedule but still remarkably tiny, really. Everything was measuring just right or actually just about a week ahead -- and the brain was measuring most ahead at 23+ weeks, ha!

Pretty amazing to watch the babycake squirming and kicking with its tiny little hands and feet. Stephanie had a cup of Earl Grey before the ultrasound, the latter in the hopes of waking up the baby, and it definitely worked.

Here's hoping the next 19 weeks go as quickly and smoothly as the first 19 weeks did!
