So, on December 6, St Nikolaus's feast day, we celebrated in the usual. He had a propensity for secret gifts, so it makes sense that this day is celebrated in Germany by putting boots out the night before, and getting candy, fruit, nuts, etc. in the boots in the morning.
That also gets celebrated at our house. I stuffed Ephiny's big Doc Marten boots with a couple of bars of Cadbury chocolate and an orange, and my country western boots with some holiday teas and an orange, and Jolly's little furry boots (Jack and Jill, bargain at Costco!) with little chocolates and two lollipops. Kate and Summer will be happy to know that they thus acted as St Nikolaus from afar.
Anyway, Ephiny got up early in the morning, having totally forgotten what day it was, was surprised (chocolate!) and went to work. Jolly and I woke up later, and Jolly found the chocolate right away. He got to have some that day, but not a limitless quantity for obvious reasons.
Today, he is totally walking around holding his boot and bringing to to me and shrieking like a harpy, presumably because it is NOT full of chocolate. It's a hard world for poor Joly! I wonder how long it will take for him to stop expecting his shoe to be a source of candy. Hopefully not until next year!
