Update

Things Jolyon has been doing of late:
- making lots of hooting noises with his mouth closed. Super-cute.
- making high pitched shrieking raptor sounds. Less super-cute.
- blowing spitbubbles and approaching raspberries. Extremely cute.
- preferring to suck on his index finger. Adorable, and possibly also better for dental development.
- doing the Shakesperean insult "I bite my thumb at thee!" with surprising accuracy. Charming!
- having rolled over in each direction exactly twice, now seems totally not interested in doing it on a more regular basis.
- is grabbing interestedly at his feet when he's on his back, in addition to face-planting onto his feet when he's sitting so he can get them in his mouth.
- loving bouncing himself up and down from a supported standing position! Most fun ever!
- sometimes transfering objects between hands. Cool!

Other growth milestones:
- grew out of his last 0-3 month sleepers, and is now solidly in 3-6 month outfits, except for the Carter onesies, where the smaller size still fits well.
- hitting the end of the size 1-2 diapers, signalling a move to size 2, at long last!

Things going in the mouth:
- Grabbed handfuls of things on the table, especially sliding around the plates.
- Grabbed bit of apple followed by gnawing on it, on Saturday after the farmer's market.
- Grabbed the romance novel I was reading aloud (age-appropriate!) bits from on Sunday, followed by gnawing on it so much that the foil was starting to wear off the cover and we put an end to it.
- Grabbed a hunk of potato tonight, with encouragement, and chewing on it, making very confused faces, and letting the chewed up bits fall out of his mouth again.

I think none of this really counts as actual eating of solids. I think it's just a natural extension of Jolyon acting like he has a sensory organ where his molars will someday be located (as pointed out by Jan). Everything Jolyon encounters needs to be brought into the recesses of his mouth for investigation right now, though fabric and fingers are still favorites. By letting him include food products in that exploration I think we might someday make a transition to actual baby led weaning. (By this I mean weaning in the British sense of "introducing solids" and not "stopping breastfeeding", as the latter is a long ways off yet).

In other news, Madeleine is no longer with us. We are sad, but will be expanding our cat population by one in the upcoming weeks because Priscilla isn't meant to be an only cat. The long list of cats at the island shelter is narrowed down very quickly by the criterion "good with young children" but we have some choices to make in the next week or two.
