Milestones: 4 months

Yesterday Jolyon had his first appointment with the new on-island doctor who will be acting as his pediatrician. Our son was pronounced completely healthy and thriving - and yes, worried grandparents will be happy to note that the hemangioma on his back since birth is absolutely nothing to worry about and will likely resolve on its own. He weighed in at 14 lbs, 2 oz (with a full diaper and long-sleeved onesie), which is tracking the 30%ile as he's been doing all along. He measured 26 and 1/8 inches, which is at the 85%ile. That slight decrease in the height percentiles now puts him onto the weight-per-length charts... at, wait for it, the 1.5%ile. No, not the 15th percentile. The first-and-a-halfth percentile. New pediatrician just as unfazed by this as old pediatrician, since he seems to be eating well and thriving, and he's been doing this all along.

Jolly received his vaccinations and was again incredibly not-so-jolly all afternoon, which was extra awesome because he was coming with me to supervise students doing labwork with concentrated acid. By the time we made it home in the afternoon, his disposition was much improved, though, and he's back to his usual smiley self today. His crankiness after vaccinations is an intense fury that just seems to last the afternoon, which is totally worth it. No Tylenol this time because we read the study about how it slightly decreases the effectiveness of vaccinations. Honestly, he was rage-filled either way, so I don't think it makes much of a difference, ultimately.

We had a really nice day today, sleeping in, having a leisurely breakfast, going to a staff appreciation party for the film festival we volunteer for (when we're not getting the swine flu, that is). Jolyon was a big hit. I think he may be inspiring one of our friends to have a baby, or at least have one sooner, which is very exciting. Jolyon really is extraordinarily happy to be passed around the party and tends to be on his absolute most-sterling behavior!

We hit Ikea afterwards and bought necessities for organizing Jolyon's new nursery as well as our new home. We also bought a soft plush-horned Viking hat for our child... mostly because I was sad it did not come in grownup sizes.

When we got home I put Jolyon down on a comforter on the floor to get my coat off, wash hands. Stephanie was wandering about trying to find our robotic vaccuum cleaner, looking under all our furniture. (It turns out that Ella (the Roomba) had busted into Jolyon's closed-off room and gotten stuck on a cord.) Amidst this chaos, I decided to give Jolyon some tummy time, and lo, he rolled over! Not much fanfare, looked like no big deal to him. I put him back on his stomach, and he did it again in the other direction. I have the feeling tummy time may be over now!

About a week and a half ago he rolled over from back onto tummy, but he hasn't repeated it since. This was the first tummy-to-back rolling!
