Someone sent Jolly super-fabulous Melissa and Doug fruit- and vegetable-cutting play sets, a little while after his birthday. Jolly was not just the recipient, but also listed by Amazon as the person placing the order, and we KNOW that's not true... not only do we monitor his access to the computer, but no charges showed up on our credit cards either. The message included was one of wishing a happy birthday, but contained no further clues as to the identity of the sender.
We had assumed by process of elimination that they came from Jolly's Aunt (who does not yet have a blog pseudonym [confidental to Jolly's Aunt: please let us know what you'd like your nom-de-blog to be!]). We had asked her to confirm our hunch some time ago, but the message went unanswered... so we just found out today when we remembered to ask again that this is not actually the case. This was the only plausible explanation we'd come up with, so now we're totally bewildered as to who might have sent this thoughtful gift.
Our misattribution means that we neglected to thank someone whom we really should have sent a thank you card, so please, anonymous benefactor, let us know who you are so we can tell you how much Jolly loves chopping up the fruit and veg, and also making Frankensteinian hybrids of anything that has matching velcro parts.
This playset has really encouraged him in wanting to cut foods in other areas of his life, too, so we recently got (from Ikea) some sets of toddler cutlery that include a toddler-sized knife for use at the actual table. The introduction of the full range of eating utensils at the table has been very successful actually, so it's safe to say that the gift has been not only for Jolly but also for us, since it gives me a special joy to see my toddler wielding fork and knife in the continental style and chopping up his waffle one piece at a time.
So, if you are reading this, please reveal your identity, secret gift-giver! This is even more perplexing than the time we came home after a trip off-island to find not only two boxes of diapers in our driveway (which had been prearranged as a drop off by kind friends who knew that our brand of diapers was on sale at Costco) but also pomegranate juice and champagne in our fridge. (The mystery of the reverse-burglarizing break-in was solved after Ephiny checked her email and it was discovered that someone else had gotten her birthday party date wrong, and left his contribution to brunch since he couldn't make it the following day... so we never had to contact the Sheriff to be written up in the crime blotter after all.)
It should be noted: we have some pretty awesome friends, truly!
